About tecmaniac.com/IT:

tecmaniac.com/IT contains the Information Technology pages of tecmaniac.com, detailing some of my IT work and ideas.

With over 10 years MVS systems programming experience, the phrase from my CV 'actively seeking and recommending improvements', inevitably leads to the Web and how the new technologies can complement the well established working practices and philosophies of mainframe systems.

Much of the content of these pages is along the lines of Intranet usage, where many OS390 operational issues, can be enhanced. For example:

  • Emailing mainframe reports or posting reports on the Intranet.

  • 'Communication' via an Intranet with validated forms.

  • Monitoring jobs as they run via a browser (using Active Server Pages).

  • 'Reading' mainframe reports via a browser (using XML).

Utilising batch commands and REXX programs to create and format data on a mainframe (or the equivalent from networked servers), then FTPing that data to an Intranet server, to be manipulated by newer technologies, can give some pretty interesting results.
